Dr. Michael Barbier works as an assistant professor at the Photonics Department of the Izmir Institute of Technology. He received his BS degree (2005) and Ph.D. degree (2012) in Physics from the University of Antwerp, Belgium. His PhD thesis was on transport properties in graphene-based nanostructures. After his PhD he worked as a research scientist at Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson performing image analysis on in-vitro cancer culture image data. Later on, he continued working on image analysis workflows, quantifying cellular morphology within the context of Alzheimer’s disease, at the University of Antwerp, Laboratory of Cell Biology & Histology. He started his second postdoctoral studies in 2019 under a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions COFUND at UNAM, Bilkent University, on the effect of noise in complex systems to understand how ordered states emerge in far-from-equilibrium conditions. Thereby used machine learning models to predict pattern formation of active and passive materials. His current research interests are in designing nanoparticle-based photonic structures.
